Review - SodaStream

SodaStream was one of the products I was ecstatic about trying. I had seen it on other blogs wondering, how well  does it work? Well, thanks to Jenna over at SodaStream I was sent a SodaStream to review. Along with the SodaStream machine I received 9 SodaMix flavors and 3 Flavor Essence bottles. The flavors i received were: Cola, Diet Cola, Diet Cream Soda, Diet Lemon-Lime, Diet Pink Grapefruit, Lemonade, Root Beer Orange-Mango and Energy. The Flavor Essences i received were Orange, Berry and Lemon-Lime.

With the SodaStream Machine came the Carbon Dioxide tank, 2 reusable 1-liter bottles and, as mentioned above, the flavors. It was very easy to set up, it took just a couple of seconds to screw in the Carbon Dioxide tank to the back of the machine. I filled up one of the bottles with filtered water from the fridge, screwed in in to the machine and pressed the carbonation button. I held it down until i heard the "pop", and i added a little more :)

Everyone agreed to try the Diet Pink Graprefruit mix first, so we added it slowly to the bottle and mixed it. It tasted wonderful! I'm not a "diet soda" drinker, but they sure are great!  So, being me, i opened up each SodaMix, stuck my finger in, and tasted them all before I added them to the carbonated water. All of them had a strong smell and great concentrated taste. I must admit, when I opened the "Enegry" SodaMix I almost creid. lol. It smelled and tasted just like the Monster Energy Drink, and i LOVE Monster.

The machine is extremely easy to set up and use. This is certainly going to be used regularly. We have been making at least two bottles a day. I keep forgetting to chill the water first though. Now, on to looks. I love the look of the SodaStream machine on the counter top, its very sleek and modern. Something you definitely will end up showing off to everyone. The reusable 1-liter bottles are adorable! They have the logo and cute bubbles :) I love making sparkling water, adding the berry flavor essence, and taking it with me when i go walk the dogs!

According to the SodaStream website, Each bottle of concentrated SodaMix contains enough syrup to make about 12 liters or 33 cans of fresh, delicious soda. No high-fructose corn syrup in regular flavors. No aspartame in diet flavors. They all are low in calories too. Overall, this product is great, the whole family loves it and it won't go more than 12-hours without being used. I'm extremely thankful for being able to review it. The only down-part is that it gradually losses its fizz, not dramatically though. If you're thinking about buying one, I can honestly say "go for it". I'm very happy!

Disclaimer: I was NOT paid for this post, however I did receive the product in question to review. All opinions are my own and I have provided a fair and honest review. I received no other compensation for my review nor was I under any obligation to give a positive review.

The first thing I thought before I got to the bottom of your post was "Does it have aspartame in it?"

Thanks for being mindful of that. That stuff is bad for you!

We've had this exact machine since March and we love it. We're drinking less soda so it's nice to be able to have lot's of flavors on hand without worrying that it's going flat (say in a 2 liter). The bottles are 1 liter but we also found out recently that they sell 1/2 liter bottles as well. Another interesting fact is that the tanks can be exchanged at Williams Sonoma stores. The staff at our store seemed like it was the first one they'd done! They don't sell the Sodastream syrups though but they have 2 Williams Sonoma Syrups that are pricey but even better than Sodastreams (Cola, Root Beer and Lemon Lime).

Also if you happen to live in WI/MN where there are Shopko stores they recently started selling these. I believe ours had the machine (with a tank and bottles), the syrups and extra bottles. I also think they carried the sample size pack. I highly recommend getting this before you buy all the big bottles. Helps you figure out what flavors you like. Normally I'm a cola girl but I LOVE the sodastream orange.

Anyways we've done the math and between the gas and the syrup it doesn't end up cheaper then soda. We buy it for the health factors (no high fructose corn syrup or aspartame) and the fun.

What are the reusable bottles made out of? Are the BPA free?

Thanks guys. The bottles are BPA free, i failed to mention that in the review. BUT it was one of the reasons why I took an interest in SodaStream :)

In 2006, Sodastream (Soda Club) tried to disallow a third party company refilling bottles of carbonic acid by claiming that the bottles were actually still “their” property and not that of the customer who had purchased them.

This didn’t work in Germany, possibly setting precedent in many other countries. Like all markets, this one certainly needs competition both for the sake of the environment (bottles should be refilled in the store an operation that takes a mere 20 seconds) and to lower prices which could easily be reduced by half. This being stated, sparkling water made at home already costs but a fraction of store purchased carbonated water and or other carbonated drinks. Things certainly could be a lot better.
The Canadian Sodastream division is ripping us off. $19.99 for a refill plus shipping in most cases that costs $2.00 at the most.
