Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Its been quite a mediocre Christmas for us but we have our head held high :) I hope everyone is enjoying their time off and with their loved ones and families because no matter how many physical items we might lose, our family and friends will always be by our side, even if just in our hearts!

On another note, I think we have a meat crisis! We have been looking around for a certain cut of meat and have had NO luck finding it in any stores! Its sold out. We drove over an hour away looking for it and still no luck. I hope we find it before tomorrow so we can make some Nicaraguan Baho for Christmas! Santa, all I want for Christmas is some Baho! I've been craving it for so long, its a very hands-on dish and with our family, only 1 person can make it, if anyone  but that 1 person touches it, it won't turn out good. My family is a mystery lol, its very labor intensive for just 1 person so its a tough once-in-a-whole delicious dish :).

P.S. Santa, if you read this, I hope you bring me a Justin Beiber doll, or Justin Beiber himself! lol

Blogger Spotlight - Crystal

This week's Blogger Spotlight is Crystal from Surviving  a Teachers Salary. Head on over to "Blogger Spotlight" for more info on being featured on Student Saving Bucks.
My name is Crystal, and I host Surviving a Teachers Salary- a fun educational blog for parents & teachers!
Ok, so I admit-I am was coupon obsessed for a while. Can you actually "coupon" too much? Yes (don't shoot me!), I think you can! Keep reading to hear my story!
After the birth of my second son we just couldn't pay all of our bills. Our insurance isn't the best and I had had a c-section. I had to start looking for a job away from home. That's when I learned how to coupon. Between couponing and watching another child during the day, that is the absolute only reason that I am able to stay home with my children. When I first learned how to coupon, I went nuts. How in the world had I not known how to do this before?! LOOK AT ALL THAT FREE STUFF just BEGGING me to take it!!! :) I hit up Walgreens, CVS, Target, & Publix every week like clockwork, but after a few months I was SO sick of drugstores and shopping- even if it was free! I felt like I was at the grocery & drugstores more than I was home! I had certainly learned how to stretch my budget very quickly, but I had also learned how to overspend when I shouldn't have- just because it was cheap!
One of my best shopping trips at Publix I spent $13.52 & saved $268.62. That's a 95% savings on my grocery bill! (Although as you will notice this was definitely an 'extras' week!) Here is what I bought: ‎12 tubs of butter, 16 jars baby food, apples, bananas, milk, 2 Emory boards, envelope, 5 boxes sugar packets, 6 boxes gelatin, bread, oreos, formula, 24 pk water, 2 mega packs GoodNites (this by itself would have cost $30!!), 22 bags cat food (not all pictured), 4 tubs Huggies wipes, 4 boxes Kotex, chips, pretzels. And check out that receipt!!! I was SO proud of it! It was almost from ceiling to floor! My husband was so proud he actually hung it up at work in his teacher's lounge where I had offered a coupon class for the employees!
I would come home elated, and exhausted! I knew how much I spent at the grocery store every week, but when I started going to the drugstores especially because I was so busy squeezing in trips I wouldn't remember how much I spent where. So I decided to have a cash envelope in my house for a few weeks and whenever that money was gone during the week it was gone. I started to realize very quickly that getting that great deal at Target, or at Walgreens/CVS added up! Putting $5 here to get that gift card deal, then rolling it later in the week with another new deal, and heading over to get my register rewards with a couple dollars out of pocket, but then paying the tax later to roll it over....it soon went from a great deal to money overspent that we didn't have! Soon I started buying fillers that weren't so cheap, and the tax for "free" products became $8 a week! (Our grocery budget for a while was $20 a week, so $8 was A LOT!) Most of the stuff I was buying I really didn't need- I just had the "freebie bug"! When I started realizing that I had a lot less money for groceries because I was rolling all these free or cheap products everywhere else, I had to take a step back and think about what I really needed. I had so much deodorant I was set for a couple years- and if I did happen to run out and not catch a sale, my world would not come crashing down because I had to buy a stick of deodorant! I started learning how to be more choosy. Just because it's free- I don't get it anymore. I have friends that coupon, that get so much free stuff they have to keep buying new deep freezers and shelving systems. All the money they saved they have bought 8 new bookshelves with! Does a small family REALLY need quite that much? Is it really saving money if you have to spend money to make your house more storage-friendly? (to a certain degree yes, but be careful of extremes!)
In fact, I hardly ever go anywhere other than my grocery store to be honest! Occasionally once or twice a year when my toothpaste/deodorant/shampoo stock pile runs low I start the rolling rewards madness, but I have saved a lot more money and enjoyed the time staying home with my kids more than getting up early every week to run out and get that great deal! (although I can't always pass up Black Fridays!) Now I'm certainly NOT saying don't grab a good deal- but take a step back and look at just how much you are really spending every week-both time, gas, & energy- to go out shopping. I have realized that the deals will always be there-some more than others. To me, it wasn't worth being exhausted just to go out and get the free stuff that was always free to couponers anyways. :)
So the next time you start feeling run down and stressed out because you can't find a coupon or that the store might be out of stock if you don't go right this second- step back and take a breather! Couponing is supposed to be fun and help you save money-not stress you out! :)
This is a great spotlight post by Crystal. She mentions the topic of overindulgent spending. I, myself, have been and still am guilty of this. After we lose our "newbie couponer" stash and become "regulars" we tend to try and out-do our last shopping trip. Sure, baby wipes are $0.25 a box, but I DON'T have kids, many deals come up that seem to good to pass up. However, when you take into consideration the tax, gas and effort you made just to get those cheap items, you spent more than you wanted. This is the reason why a lot of my shopping trips don't compare to the ones I had back in June/July when I was starting out.

What are your opinions on over-spending while couponing? Are you guilty too?

Review - Beauty Stop Online: RUSK Products

I have teamed up with Beauty Stop Online to review various beauty products from their online store. I love the selection of items they have, all name brand. I reviewed the Hot Tools Ceramic Titanium Curling Iron a little while back and I love that purple beauty! I use it almost daily and just love the way it makes my hair feel!

This time around, the great guys over at Beauty Stop Online sent me a couple of Rusk Hair products. I received the Rusk Sensories Cure Treatment, Rusk Sensories Bright Shine Spray and the Rusk Str8 Anti-Frizz & Anti-Curl Lotion. I must say, the colorful bottles would really catch my attention in any store :) They sell for about $9.99 - $13.99, depending on the products and size.
Right off the bat, whenever I buy or receive hair products, I smell them. I can not put anything that smells odd to me in my hair, it just won't happen. Thankfully these RUSK hair care products all smelled wonderful, after you use them you feel and smell like you just got your hair professionally done in a Salon. I love that! As most of my regular readers know, my hair is both Black and Blonde, as I've been having it for about 6-7 years now. Constantly having to bleach my hair, I sometimes don't get my desired color and the Blonde part of my hair has a brassy orange-type color. This also happens after a while, my solution has always been just to bleach it again.

The RUSK Sensories Bright Shine Spray, that comes in the cute pink bottle, has been a a lifesaver! Over the course of just over 2 weeks with daily use, it has reduced the orange-type/brass tint from my Blonde hair. I really do wish I had taken before and after pictures. My sister is quite fond of the RUSK st8 Anti-Frizz, Anti-Curl lotion. It smells great and has calmed down those very strong curls she gets in the front. As for frizz control, we've seen a very small change.

The products that I've found doesn't work well for me was the RUSK Sensories Cure Treatment. It is a vitamin and protein stretching treatment. What I find odd about this product is that the directions on the back say "Spray liberally through clean towel-dried hair. Massage in and leave in 3-5 minutes. Rinse. Condition. Rinse. Style." Now, I don't know why in the world i would towel-dry my hair just to back in and wash it out, rinse, condition and rinse again. I tried the product but only during the last 10 minutes of my shower when my hair was still wet and after my shampoo and conditioner. I see no difference in my hair with this product and don't care for it much.

Two out of three is not bad in my book. Especially considering how much I love the 1st product. It brings so much shine to my hair that it almost gives it the illusion of being wet, and that was a style that I was very much into in my late teens. :) A huge thanks to John, from Beauty Stop Online, for the opportunity to review their product and their great store! :) So great to work with! :) Don't forget to connect with them on Twitter and Facebook for great product giveaways! I have so many favorites, so check out their great selection!

Disclaimer: I was NOT paid for this post, however I did receive the product in question, from the company or their representing  PR company,  free of charge in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own and I have provided a fair and honest review. I received no other compensation for my review nor was I under any obligation to give a positive review.

It Finally Arrived! ... I ♥ It

I got it, I love it! I got my iPod delivered Monday at around 2pm and haven't put it down yet. I can't believe I've gone all this time without even making contact with one. I should call it blind hatred, Apple, you're ok in my book.

Its really funny that my iPod Touch 4g is an MP3 player because I haven't loaded one single mp3 in there since I got it. The apps have been keeping me busy. So many cute game! The graphics are pretty incredible for something so small and light. They are by far 100x better than the Play Station 1 and even rival those of the Play Station 2. I'm dumbfounded with this device.

I was so exited that I went on Skype and called myself from the iPod. I can't wait to see what iPod accessories I can review for it :) I'm so happy, I feel like a kid in a candy store, even though I don't like candy, lol. Again, any Free apps or games you can recommend, I'll be grateful! I'm enjoying harvesting little zombies and play High School Hero right now :) Best Christmas present ever!

"Cooking With Ai Mei" - Arroz Con Leche

Sure, treats like Hot Chocolate are great during these cold Holidays, but I prefer something else. Arroz con Leche, which translates to "Rice Pudding" (literally, rice with milk). It is one of the most common desserts in nearly all Latin American countries. The origin of this dessert is unknown, but most likely was brought over to Latin America from Spain. There are very many variations of this dessert, but if you want the simplest form, its just milk and rice. Here is my version with variations we usually make.

Recipe:
■ Rice, any type (1 cup)
■ Milk, (2½ - 3 cups)
■ Water, (1 cup)
■ Sugar, (1½ - 2 cups)
■ Vanilla Extract, (1 teaspoon)
■ Cinnamon Stick, 1
■ Ground Cinnamon

Directions:
  1. In a saucepan, bring 1 cup of water to boil on medium-heat. Throw in 1 stick of cinnamon.
  2. Wash 1 cup of rice and pour it into the saucepan and reduce the heat to low and let simmer. Stir frequently to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Its important to boil the rice in water before adding the milk, it will speed up the process to soften the rice.
  3. Add the 2½ cups of milk to the saucepan, stirring frequently on low-heat. As the rice absorbs the milk you can add more if you you want a more liquid consistency. Let simmer for about 10 - 15 minutes and add 1½ - 2 cups of Sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (or add both to your liking).
  4. Let simmer for about 10 - 15 more minutes, or until rice is tender and its reached a consistency you like.
Now, serve nice and hot with some ground cinnamon on top. You can also leave it out and let it cool and eat it that way too, which is the way I prefer :)

Variations: With the recipe above, we sometimes add raisins which we soak in rum (Flor De Caña, Gran Reserva). Also, we sometimes add some butter, nutmeg, we add orange and.or lemon peel during step one and remove it around step 3. Other variations around Latin America include the addition of sweetened condensed milk, which replaces or combines the sugar; adding coconut milk instead of regular white milk; the addition of nutmeg, lemon or orange zest and crushed pineapple is also common.
ツ
I hope you guys try this and enjoy it. This dessert is readily available to buy at many stores, but when YOU make it, you get a great treat and satisfaction. Oh, and bragging rights! :) I hope to have more of these "Cooking With Ai Mei" posts in the future.

Joining Meet Me On Monday
Hosted by: NeverGrowingOld
Questions:
1.  What will your Christmas dinner consist of?
I actually have no idea. Don't know if we'll be cooking a lot this Christmas.
2.  Do you watch commercials or flip through the channels?
Depends on the commercial. There are some that I like and some I don't. So its half and half, sometimes I do, other times  I don't :)
3.  How long will you leave your Christmas decorations up?
About 2-3 weeks after New Years :) Sometimes less.
4.  What movie makes you cry every time you watch it?
"Sad Movie". Its a Korean movie that does its name justice lol. I have been known to cry during quite a few, not cry but get teary.
5.  Do you have a Facebook?
I do. One is personal, for family & close friends but I hardly go on. The other is for my blog, that one I'm on daily :)
